An Excerpt from Old Stories

I have been writing, I just sadly have been neglecting this blog. :( Book 1 is finished and in the editing stages. Book 2 is in the writing stage with a bit of research mixed in. Books 3 and 4 (yes, already!) have been outlined loosely.

In the meantime, I wanted to share this. It's something I wrote in high school. I found one of my writing notebooks filled with unfinished stories. This is all I have of this story idea. It's sort of weird but it's giving me ideas. I might have to turn this excerpt into a short story. ;) Here it is:

I flopped onto the bus seat with a sigh of resignation. Another day… I didn’t even want to think about it. I slid over to the window and put my backpack on the seat next to me. Nobody was going to sit with me, so what did it matter? I stared out the window and thought of the games that I used to play with myself when I was little.
The little elf and fairy that I imagined were a favorite of mine. They would skate along on the patches of ice in the marsh alongside the road. They would hold hands and twirl around, then leap into the air to make it to the next frozen patch and keep up with the bus. Both of them liked to keep me company on my long drive to school – the elf with his mischievous smile and the fairy with her pretty glittering eyes. Sadly, they could only keep up with the bus as long as there were patches of ice along the road. So, we had to say our farewells when we left the marsh and longer farewells when the heat of the spring sun melted their paths.
I could almost see my imagined creatures dancing alongside of the bus now. But I was now too old for childish fantasies, as the world around me had forced me to grow up fast.
The girl sitting in the seat in front of me began to sing some made-up song of hers. She always sat alone as well, but for her it was more of her choice. I had no friends on the bus and no one would dare sit with me. No matter. If someone sat with me I couldn’t spend the time thinking and imagining. To the outside world I seemed too serious, too mature. Little did they know the things that went on in my mind – the only place I allowed myself to be creative and, yes, even a little childish.
On the bus I was mostly safe. Often I wished the bus would drive all day and I wouldn’t end up at school but, alas, my wish never came true.
I turned my attention to the back of the seat in front of me and without even thinking about it, I began another favorite pastime. There were so many images interwoven into the texture of the seats. It was a lot like staring at the clouds or an inkblot. Depending on my mood, I saw different things everyday even though I always sat in the same seat. Today, the duck looked more like a giant bird with his mouth open, ready to eat anything in his path. The tea party was still the same as yesterday, though. Two creatures silently drank tea at a table while the grotesque giant bird glared on from nearby.
Conversations continued on around me but I didn’t hear them. My world consisted of the scenery out the window, the seat before me, and the fantasies that my mind created.
My mind drifted from the creatures trapped in the seat and I began to wonder what would happen if someone threw a pin and it poked someone else right in the eye. I cringed at the thought and shifted uncomfortably in the seat. I hated it when weird and squirm-worthy thoughts popped into my head. I turned my attention to the window again to remove the image from my mind; and with dismay I realized that the school was just beyond the hill the color of chocolate milk because of its covering of muddy snow.
I sighed again and started to pack my things up. Even if the day was terrible, I still had the bus ride home to look forward to. This thought comforted me as I filed off the bus with the other students and faced another day of problems, ridicule, and hard work. At least I had the quiet time on the bus ride home as my solace.

I haven't forgotten my book!

I just haven't posted here in awhile. *ashamed*

I finished the first draft of my novel and also did one preliminary revision to it. Now I need to go through and really tear it apart. I have a few people reading it to give feedback and am thinking of joining a critique group. I also changed the title to Lineage. It's a relief to finish it but it's also daunting to think of the edits that are before me.

I also entered the Amazon Breakthrough Novelist Award and was just cut today in the first round. Ah well. I wasn't expecting much since I found out about the contest with only days to enter and wrote the pitch quickly.

I've also started on book two of the series. It's set mainly in modern-day and 1830s-1840s Ireland. Yup, I have my work cut out for me. ;) And I've already come up with basic ideas for more books in the series.

I'm hoping to finish revisions of book 1 by the summer and then I will decide if I want to try to get it published or go the self-publishing route. I'm excited and nervous about it all!

Passed 40K for the Month!

Which means I should be able to win JulNoWriMo sometime this week when I hit 50K. Yay! :)

I'm working on the big climax of the book. I'm thinking it's highly likely that I will have to make this Part IV. I'm thinking I'll be done with Part IV in the next 10K-20K words.

I'm not done with the story, though. I skipped some parts, so I'll have to go back and write them or give them more depth. I'm sure there's plenty that will have to be rewritten as well.

I was originally aiming for 100K total, because I heard most publishers are looking for 75-90K for a novel. But now I see that I work best by getting the story done first, and then going back and embellishing it more and adding more description. So I might finish my rough draft way short of 100K, but will probably get closer into the 75-90K range after editing.

Writing is going fairly well. I don't encounter too many writer's blocks. So far, when I come up to a part of the plot that I'm a bit fuzzy on, it just comes out. If I try to plan some parts ahead of time, I can't think of what should happen.

But now, I'm coming up to an important climax. I got most of it figured out, but then there will be a big confrontation at the end. I have no clue how that is going to work. I know what I want the outcome to be, but am not sure how to get to that outcome. I'm hoping it just comes out when I get that far sometime this week. I'm not sure how I'll end the story if I can't get that to work out!

So, total word count is 68,666 and it is 236 pages. I wrote 40,862 of those words in July so far.

Blog is being reconstructed...

Sorry for any frustration that it may cause. I have decided to make my excerpts and posts about plot/characters/etc private. I figured it was silly to risk someone stealing my work if I am considering publishing at some point.

So I have a separate blog that is only open to people close to me and any readers that are chosen for critiques. Let me know if you would like access and I'll consider it. ;)

50K BABY!!

That's TOTAL word count, not just in July for JulNoWriMo. But still! 50K! Woot! :)

The actual total word count is 50,055. 22,251 of that was written in July alone so far. Total page count is 168.

Quick Word Count Post

It's late and I'm tired, so this is pretty much only going to be an update on the word count. I was able to type over 5K today. Impressive considering it was the 4th of July and I went to the fireworks. ;)

Total word count is now 45,223. Almost 50K! 17,420 of that has been done since July 1st, for JulNoWriMo. It's 152 pages. I will probably be starting Part III tomorrow. :)

Up to Chapter 19!

Got some more major writing done today, although not quite as much as yesterday. Of course the day isn't over, so it is possible I might get some more done before midnight. But I still wanted to post an update now.

With the writing I did today, and also sliding in already written scenes into chapters, I am almost done with up to and including Chapter 19. I just need to write the beginning of Chapter 19, and then I'll be on to Chapter 20.

I think there's still a few things missing from many of the chapters, but I think I will just forge on and I can always add those things in later or during editing. The main story is there, and that's what's important.

Total word count is 35,972 and 2,874 of that was written today. Page count is 119. :)

ETA: After some more writing tonight, official word count is now 38,742 and it's 129 pages. Officially 20% of the way done with JulNoWriMo! And about 38% of the way to my ultimate word count goal.
